Pictograms
A pictogram uses symbols to show frequency. Always read the key first, then multiply the number of symbols by the value of one symbol. If there is a half symbol, it represents half of the key value. To answer total questions, convert each row first and then add the values.
Common mistake: Do not count each symbol as 1 unless the key says so. If one symbol represents 5 items, then 4 symbols represent 20 items.
Worked example:
Use the pictogram. How many books are shown for Class 7A?
- Each symbol represents \(5\) books.\[3\times5=15\]

Class 7A has \(15\) books.
Worked example:
Use the pictogram. Calculate the total number of visitors from Monday to Wednesday.
- There are \(2.5+3+1.5=7\) symbols in total.\[7\times20=140\]
