Percentage of an Amount 2

To find a percentage of an amount using a multiplier, write the percentage as a decimal and multiply by the amount. For example, 23% becomes 0.23, so 23% of an amount is found by multiplying the amount by 0.23.

Common mistake: Do not multiply by the percentage as a whole number. For example, 6.5% means multiply by \(0.065\), not by \(6.5\).

Worked example:
Find 23% of £150.
  1. Convert 23% to a decimal multiplier.
    \[23\% = 0.23\]
    \[0.23 \times 150 = 34.5\]
Answer:
23% of £150 is £34.50.
Worked example:
Find 6.5% of £480.
  1. Convert 6.5% to a decimal multiplier.
    \[6.5\% = 0.065\]
    \[0.065 \times 480 = 31.2\]
Answer:
6.5% of £480 is £31.20.
